SkypeMe! status invites spam
I’ve been getting a lot of Skype spam lately - mostly along the lines of “hey there, I am a young Russian virgin - give me a call …”. Usually chat messages, but sometimes even calls. I went into Skype->Preferences and set my contact preferences to “Only my contacts” for everything. But it didn’t work - the spam continued. Then I found that my status was set to “SkypeMe!” - changing it back to “Online” then stopped the spam. Astonishingly, the contact preferences don’t seem to work, or at least they are overriden when the status is sent to “SkypeMe!”.
So, short story is don’t use the “SkypeMe!” status. It’s bound to lead to a deluge of spam, in the same way as broadcasting your email address in a public forum.
